ABSTRACT

Abstract Sea lice are widespread copepods in marine teleost around the world. In this paper the first record of Caligus asperimanus Pearse, 1951 in the Western South Atlantic is documented parasitizing Lutjanus jocu and Lutjanus vivanus caught from coastal zones of Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro State, respectively.


Resumo Os piolhos marinhos são copépodes abrangentemente relatados em teleósteos marinhos ao redor do mundo. Neste estudo, é documentado o primeiro registro de Caligus asperimanus Pearse, 1951, no Atlântico Sul Ocidental, parasitando Lutjanus jocu e Lutjanus vivanus capturados nas zonas costeiras do Espírito Santo e Rio de Janeiro, respectivamente.

ABSTRACT

Aims@#Fisheries-based food is needed by humans as a protein source, one of which is salted fish Lutjanus vivanus. Market demand for this product in Indonesia is quite high. The aim of the study was to identify pathogenic bacteria in salted fish L. vivanus. @*Methodology and results@#The method used in this study was descriptive method including pathogenic test, bacterial genomic DNA isolation based on 16 sRNA gene using prokaryotic specific primers, namely 63f forward primer (5′-CAG GCC TAA CAC ATG CAA GTC-3′) and reverse 1387r primer (5′-GGG CGG WGT GTA CAA GGC-3′). The results of this study indicated pathogenic bacteria in salted fish L. vivanus with pathogenic activity of α hemolytic and β hemolytic. The bacteria were identified as Serratia marcescens strain ZK2 16S for isolate KS and Bacillus altitudinis strains A-19 16S for isolate LG. @*Conclusion, significance and impact of study@#In salted fish L. vivanus in the Sorong city, West Papua, it was obtained Serratia marcescens strain ZK2 16S with total hemolytic activity and B. altitudinis A-19 16S strain with partial hemolytic activity.

Abstract Three species of snappers from artisanal, small-scale fisheries were examined for the presence of parasites. A total of 139 lutjanid fish were collected: 69 specimens of Lutjanus analis, 47 specimens of Lutjanus vivanus, and 23 specimens of Lutjanus synagris. Encysted plerocercoid of trypanorhynch cestodes found at necropsy in the viscera of snappers were sampled for parasitological analysis. These plerocercoid larvae belong to the genera Floriceps, Pseudogrillotia , and Oncomegas. Although these parasites do not have any zoonotic potential, fish with heavy loads of plerocercoids are rejected during inspection as they compromise meat hygiene. Our findings suggest that light larval cestode infections in lutjanids would not lead to consumer rejection of the food product. The occurrence of Floriceps sp. in L. analis and in L. synagris, of Pseudogrillotia sp. in L. vivanus and in L. synagris , and of Oncomegas sp. in L. synagris are new findings in these fish species. These parasites are new to these fish species and have not been reported in snappers from the northeast coast of Brazil. The results contribute to the existing body of knowledge about the parasitic fauna of fish and its distribution along the coastline of Brazil.


Resumo Três espécies de pargos de pescaria artesanal e de pequena escala foram examinadas quanto à presença de parasitas. Um total de 139 peixes lutjanídeos foram coletados: 69 espécimes de Lutjanus analis, 47 de Lutjanus vivanus e 23 de Lutjanus synagris. Cistos de plerocercóides de cestodas Trypanorhyncha encontrados durante a necrópsia nas vísceras de pargos foram amostrados para análise parasitológica. Estas larvas plerocercóides pertencem aos gêneros Floriceps, Pseudogrillotia e Oncomegas. Embora esses parasitas não tenham qualquer potencial zoonótico, peixes com elevadas cargas de plerocercóides são rejeitados durante a inspeção, pois comprometem a higiene da carne. Os achados sugerem que baixas infecções por essas formais larvais de cestodas em lutjanídeos não levariam a rejeição do consumidor quanto ao produto alimentar. A ocorrência de Floriceps sp. em L. analis e em L. synagris, de Pseudogrillotia sp. em L. vivanus e em L. syngaris, e de Oncomegas sp. em L. synagris são novas descobertas nestas espécies de peixes. Estes parasitas são novos para essas espécies de peixes e não foram relatados em pargos da costa nordeste do Brasil. Os resultados contribuem para o conhecimento existente sobre a fauna parasitária do peixe e sua distribuição ao longo do litoral do Brasil.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the prevalence, phylogenetics and DNA barcoding of Zeylanicobdella arugamensis (Z. arugamensis) from crimson snapper (Lutjanus erythropterus), Jerejak Island, Penang, Malaysia. Methods Experiment was conducted with 200 fish specimens of cultured Lutjanus erythropterus from Jerejak Island, Penang, Peninsular Malaysia. The water temperature and length for each fish were measured prior to parasites examination. Next, the morphological identification of parasites was performed. Genomic DNA from parasites was extracted for further molecular analysis. After PCR amplification, phylogenetic tree was constructed. The lowest Bayesian information criterion scores showed that the most compatible model is Tajima and Nei. Finally, data sets of cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene sequence and trace file have been submitted to Barcode of Life Data System. Results The prevalence rate of Z. arugamensis was recorded to be 11.5%, and the intensity was 1.48. The low intensity was due to the water temperature recorded in this study (32.9–33.2 °C). All the individuals of Z. arugamensis recorded in this study showed a close relationship with species that were recorded in NCBI database (Z. arugamensis DQ414344, Aestabdella leiostomi DQ414305, Pterobdella amara DQ414334 and Cystobranchus meyeri DQ414315) but less relationship with Aestabdella abditovesiculata DQ414300. Finally, the DNA sequences submitted to Barcode of Life Data System in accordance to species have already obtained Barcode Index Number as BOLD: ACM3477. Conclusions This study has provided an overview of sequence divergence at cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene, DNA barcodes and parasite prevalence of Z. arugamensis.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT In the present study, a novel set of eight EPIC primers were developed for Lutjanus purpureus and assayed in five other marine teleosts including three lutjanids, one scianid and one anablepid. Most of the genomic regions used in this study presented genetic diversity indexes equal or greater than the intragenic regions commonly used in population genetics studies. Moreover, six out of eight markers showed cross-amplification with other taxa. Thus, the primers described here may be used to elucidate questions at the intraspecific level for a large number of taxa.

ABSTRACT

The fatty acid (FA) profiles of fish species with a similar genetic or geographic origin are important quality parameters that attract bioecological interest because they are influenced by the nutritional habits of the species. The aim of this study was to determine the proximate compositions and FA profiles of heart, brain and muscle tissues from three fish species (Lutjanus purpureus, Lutjanus synagris and Ocyurus chrysurus) captured from the Amazonian Atlantic Coast. In addition to performing nutritional analysis of the FA profiles, principal components analysis (PCA) was performed as a chemometric tool to discriminate among the species. Lutjanus synagris had the highest protein content (18.23%), while O. chrysurus possessed the highest lipid content (4.25%). All of the nutritional quality parameters (the n-6/n-3 and Σ polyunsaturated FA/Σ saturated FA ratios and dietary indices of atherogenicity and thrombogenicity) of the FA profiles of the three species are of interest to consumers. In general, the predominant FA in the tissues of all species analyzed was palmitic acid, followed by stearic acid. Oleic acid was predominant among the monounsaturated FAs, while docosahexaenoic acid was the most prevalent polyunsaturated FA. Chemometric analysis was an effective tool for fish identification. PCA showed that the FA profiles of the brain tissues were optimal for discriminating among the species, with O. chrysurus showing the most different FA profile from the others. The muscle FA profile was the most useful for identifying L. purpureus.


Perfis de ácidos graxos (AGs) de espécies de peixes com uma origem genética ou geográfica semelhante são importantes parâmetros de qualidade e apresentam interesse bioecológico, uma vez que são influenciados pelos hábitos nutricionais das espécies. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a composição centesimal e os perfis de AGs do coração, cérebro e músculo de três espécies de peixes (Lutjanus purpureus, Lutjanus synagris e Ocyurus chrysurus) capturados na Costa Atlântica Amazônica. Além de fornecer uma análise nutricional dos perfis de AGs, uma análise de componentes principais (ACP) foi realizada como uma ferramenta quimiométrica para discriminar entre as espécies. Lutjanus synagris teve o maior teor de proteína (18,23%), enquanto O. chrysurus apresentou a maior concentração de lipídios (4,25%). Todos os parâmetros de qualidade nutricional (as proporções de n-6/n-3 e ΣPUFAs/ΣSFAs, e os índices dietéticos de aterogenicidade e trombogenicidade) dos perfis de AGs nas três espécies se mostraram de interesse para os consumidores. Em geral, o AGs predominante nos tecidos de todas as espécies analisadas foi o ácido palmítico, seguido pelo ácido esteárico. O ácido oléico foi predominante entre os AGs monoinsaturados, enquanto que o ácido docosahexaenoico foi o mais prevalente entre a classe poliinsaturada. A análise quimiométrica foi uma ferramenta eficaz para identificação dos peixes. A ACP mostrou que os perfis de AGs dos tecidos cerebrais foram melhores para discriminar entre as espécies, com O. Ocyurus mostrando o perfil de AGs mais diferente em relação às outras espécies. O perfil de AGs do músculo foi o mais útil para a identificação de L. purpureus.

AbstractThis study aims developing and evaluate a protocol of semen cryopreservation of the lane snapper Lutjanus synagris. Firstly, sperm motility rate, motility time, density and spermatocrit were appraised to characterize the sperm quality of the lane snapper. The effect of three extenders with distinct ionic compositions and pH values combined with seven concentrations of cryoprotector dimethylsulfoxide (0; 2.5; 5.0; 7.5; 10.0; 12.5 e 15.0%), five cooling rates (110, 90, 60, 45 e 30°C –min), nine equilibration time (1; 2,5; 5; 10; 15; 20; 25; 30 e 60 minutes) e five dilutions ratio (1:1; 1:3; 1:6; 1:10 e 1:20) on the sperm motility rate and motility time were analyzed. Fertilization test was accomplished to evaluate the viability of the cryopreserved sperm. The higher sperm motility rate and motility time (P<0.05) was achieved by combining extender with pH 8.2 with 10% concentration of dimethylsulfoxide and cooling rate 60°C –min, 1 minute of equilibration time and 1:3 (v/v) dilution ratio. The use of cryopreserved sperm presented fertilization rates >60% validating the present protocol for lane snapper. The cryoconserved sperm of lane snapper is a viable alternative, being possible to maintain appropriate sperm viability.


ResumoEste estudo teve a finalidade de desenvolver e avaliar um protocolo de crioconservação do sêmen do ariocó Lutjanus synagris. Para caracterizar o sêmen foram avaliados a taxa de motilidade, a duração da motilidade, a concentração espermática e o espermatócrito. Em seis experimentos foram analisados os efeitos de três diluentes, com distintas composições iônicas e valores de pH distintos, combinados com sete concentrações de dimetilsulfóxido (0; 2,5; 5,0; 7,5; 10,0; 12,5 e 15,0%), cinco velocidades de congelamento (–110, –90, –60, –45 e –30°C/min), nove tempos de equilíbrio (1; 2,5; 5; 10; 15; 20; 25; 30 e 60 minutos) e cinco proporções de sêmen:diluente (1:1; 1:3; 1:6; 1:10 e 1:20) sobre a taxa de motilidade e a duração da motilidade espermáticas. Posteriormente um teste de fertilização foi realizado para avaliar a viabilidade do sêmen crioconservado. O tratamento que propiciou maior taxa de motilidade e duração da motilidade espermáticas (P<0,05) foi aquele proporcionado pelo emprego do diluente com pH 8,2 com dimetilsulfóxido a 10%, em uma velocidade de congelamento de –60°C/min, com tempo de equilíbrio de 1 minuto e na proporção de 1:3 (v/v). O sêmen crioconservado apresentou taxa de fertilização superior a 69% validando o presente protocolo para o ariocó. A crioconservação do sêmen do ariocó é uma alternativa viável, sendo possível manter uma apropriada qualidade espermática.

ABSTRACT

The spotted rose snapper (Lutjanus guttatus) is an important commercial species in Mexico with good culture potential. The osteological study at early stages in this species is an important tool to confirm normal bone structure and for the detection of malformations that may occur during early development. This study was carried out in order to evaluate and describe the normal osteological development of the vertebral column and caudal complex of this species grown under controlled conditions. For this, a total of 540 larvae of L. guttatus, between 2.1 and 17.5mm of total length (TL), were cultured during 36 days; culture conditions were 28ºC, 5.74mg/L oxygen and 32.2ups salinity with standard feeding rates. To detect growth changes, a sample of 15 organisms was daily taken from day one until day 36 of post-hatch (DPH). Samples were processed following standard techniques of clearing, and cartilage (alcian blue) and bone staining (alizarin red). Results showed that the vertebral column is composed of ten vertebrae in the abdominal region, and 14 vertebrae including the urostyle in the caudal region. The development of the axial skeleton starts with the neural arches and haemal arches at 3.8mm TL. Caudal elements such as the hypurals and parahypural began to develop at 4.1mm TL. Pre-flexion and flexion of the notochord and the formation of all hypurals were observed between 5.3 and 5.8mm TL. Ossification of the vertebrae in the abdominal region and in some neural arches initiated at 9.5mm TL. In the caudal region, all the neural and haemal arches ossified at 10.2mm TL. All the abdominal vertebrae and their respective neural arches and parapophyses ossified at 11.2mm TL, while the elements of the caudal complex that ossified were the hypurals, parahypurals and modified haemal spines. All caudal fin rays, 12 neural spines and 3 haemal arches were ossified by 15.5mm. The complete ossification process of this specie under laboratory culture conditions was observed when larvae reached 17.3mm TL on 36 DPH. Detailed analysis of the osteological structures will allow a reference description to evaluate and detect malformations that may occur during the larval culture of the spotted rose snapper.


El pargo flamenco (Lutjanus guttatus) es una especie de importancia comercial en México con un gran potencial para su cultivo. El estudio osteológico en estadios tempranos de esta especie bajo condiciones controladas, es una herramienta importante para el conocimiento de su estructura ósea normal y poder detectar las malformaciones que se puedan presentar. El objetivo del presente trabajo se realizó para conocer y describir el desarrollo osteológico normal de la columna vertebral y el complejo caudal de 540 larvas de 2.1 a 17.5mm de longitud total (LT) bajo condiciones de cultivo a 28°C, 5.74mg/L de oxígeno y 32.2UPS de salinidad. Diariamente se tomó una muestra de 15 organismos desde el día uno hasta el 36 después de la eclosión (DDE) y se procesaron con las técnicas de clareado y tinción de cartílago (azul aciano) y hueso (rojo alizarina) para llevar a cabo la descripción de las estructuras. La columna vertebral se divide en región abdominal con diez vértebras y región caudal compuesta por 14 vértebras incluido el urostilo. El desarrollo del esqueleto axial inicia con la formación de los arcos neurales y hemales a los 3.8mm de LT. A los 4.1mm de LT empieza la formación de los hipurales y parahipural que son elementos caudales. Entre los 5.3 y 5.8mm de LT se observó en pre-flexión y flexión del notocordio y la formación de todos los hipurales. La osificación de las vértebras en la región abdominal y en algunos arcos neurales inició a los 9.5mm de LT. A los 10.2mm de LT se osificó la región caudal y todos los arcos neurales y hemales. A los 11.2mm LT se osificaron todas las vértebras abdominales con sus respectivos arcos neurales y los parapófisis, mientras que los elementos del esqueleto caudal que se osificaron fueron los hipurales, parahipurales y las espinas hemales modificadas. A los 15.5mm de LT se osificaron los radios de la aleta caudal y 12 espinas neurales y 3 hemales. El proceso de osificación de las larvas de esta especie en condiciones de cultivo se completó a los 17.3mm LT o 36 DDE. El análisis detallado de las estructuras osteológicas, permitirá una descripción de referencia para evaluar y detectar las malformaciones que se puedan presentar durante el cultivo larvario.

ABSTRACT

The Gorean snapper, Lutjanus goreensis is an important component of artisanal fisheries and trawl landings in the Gulf of Guinea. Despite its economic importance, there is a dearth of information on size structure and life history strategies of the species. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to provide baseline data on the life stages, exploitation status and habitat use for the species in Nigeria. Monthly samples were obtained from artisanal and trawl catches in Five Cowrie Creek and Lagos coastal waters between December 2008 and December 2010, respectively. Length-frequency distributions of the fishes caught were analysed to provide preliminary information on mean and modal lengths at capture and life - history strategies based on habitat use and estuarine-dependency for L. goreensis. A total of 822 specimens of L. goreensis were collected from Five Cowrie Creek while 377 specimens were collected from Lagos coastal waters. Total length varied between 7.90-34.90cm for creek samples and from 21.90-56.10cm for marine samples. Length-frequency histograms showed polymodal size distributions in creek and marine samples. Length-frequency distributions of L. goreensis showed a high abundance of juveniles (<20cm) and sub-adults (20-35cm) which accounted for 84.1% and 68.4% of creek and marine samples examined, respectively. For the creek samples, fish in modal length class of 13.00-13.99cm were the most exploited while in the marine samples, length classes of 29.00-30.99cm and 31.00-32.99cm constituted the most frequently exploited fishes. Increase in total lengths from the creek (mean±SD; 16.19±3.73cm) to the marine habitat samples (32.89±6.14cm) indicated ontogenetic shift in habitat use. Occurrence of a predominant juvenile population in Five Cowrie Creek by L. goreensis suggests estuarine-dependency and is indicative of a temporary juvenile habitat or a migratory corridor. In conclusion, data from the presently reported study and previous studies demonstrated that juvenile L. goreensis displays estuarine dependency and habitat flexibility. Hence, this underscores the importance of preserving estuarine environments as essential fish habitats to prevent overfishing. The study also concludes that the species is vulnerable to recruitment overfishing in the marine environment especially as a consequence of shrimping. Consequently, it advocates for ban on all fishing activities during peak spawning periods in breeding grounds and shrimp ground assemblage.


El pargo Lutjanus goreensis es un componente importante de la pesca artesanal y de arrastre en el Golfo de Guinea. A pesar de su importancia económica, hay una escasez de información sobre la estructura de tamaño y las estrategias de historia de vida de las especies. Por lo tanto, los objetivos de este estudio fueron proporcionar datos de referencia sobre las etapas del ciclo de vida, el estado de la explotación y el hábitat de la especie en Nigeria. Se realizaron recolectas mensuales de capturas artesanales y de arrastre en Five Cowrie Creek y aguas costeras de Lagos en diciembre 2008 y diciembre 2010, respectivamente. Se analizaron las distribuciones de frecuencia de tallas de los peces capturados para proporcionar información preliminar sobre la media y longitudes modales en la captura y las estrategias de historia de vida basado en el uso del hábitat y la dependencia a los estuarios para L. goreensis. Un total de 822 ejemplares de L. goreensis se obtuvieron de Five Cowrie Creek, mientras que 377 muestras de las aguas costeras de Lagos. La longitud total varió entre 7.90-34.90cm para muestras del estuario y 21.90-56.10cm para marinas. Histogramas de frecuencia de talla mostraron distribuciones de tamaño polimodales en muestras estuarinas y marinas. Distribuciones de frecuencia de talla de L. goreensis mostraron una alta abundancia de juveniles (<20cm) y subadultos (20-35cm) que representaron el 84.1% y el 68.4% de los estuarios y las muestras marinas examinadas respectivamente. Para las muestras del estuario, peces de talla 13.00-13.99cm fueron los más explotados, mientras que en muestras marinas, las tallas de 29.00-30.99cm y 31.00-32.99cm constituyeron los peces más frecuentemente explotados. Un aumento de la longitud total de la quebrada (media±SD; 16.19±3.73cm) para el hábitat marino (32.89±6.14cm) indicó un cambio ontogenético en el uso del hábitat. La aparición de una población juvenil predominante en Five Cowrie Creek por L. goreensis sugiere una estuario-dependencia y es indicativa de un hábitat juvenil temporal o un corredor migratorio. En conclusión, los datos del estudio actual y estudios previos demostraron que juveniles de L. goreensis presentan una dependencia a los estuarios y una flexibilidad en el uso de hábitat. Por lo tanto, esto subraya la importancia de preservar los ambientes estuarinos como hábitats esenciales de peces para evitar la sobrepesca. El estudio también concluye que la especie es vulnerable a la sobrepesca de reclutamiento en el medio marino, especialmente como consecuencia de la pesca de camarón. En consecuencia, se aboga por la prohibición de todas las actividades pesqueras durante los períodos de mayor puesta de huevos.

ABSTRACT

El pargo colorado (Lutjanus colorado) es una especie con un alto valor comercial en el mercado mexicano, con potencial para su cultivo. Hasta la fecha no existen estudios sobre su reproducción, cultivo larvario y engorda en cautiverio. El presente trabajo es el primer reporte sobre la descripción a detalle del desarrollo embrionario de la especie bajo condiciones de cultivo. Los huevos fertilizados viables del pargo colorado son pelágicos, esféricos, transparentes y con una sola gota de aceite. Midieron 0,77±0,09 mm de diámetro y la gota de aceite 0,14±0,01 mm. La primera división ocurrió a las 0,05 horas post fertilización (HPF). La eclosión se llevó a cabo a las 17,22 HPF bajo las condiciones del presente estudio. Las larvas recién eclosionadas midieron 1,8±0,1 mm de longitud total (LT). El desarrollo embrionario de esta especie fue similar a la descrita para especies de la misma familia. Los resultados del presente estudio aportan información básica para iniciar el desarrollo de la biotecnología para la producción de semilla de esta especie a escala comercial.


The Colorado snapper (Lutjanus colorado) is one of the most commercially important fish species in México and it is considered a suitable candidate for culture. Until now, no research has been carried out on its reproduction, larviculture and fattening in captivity. This study is the first description of embryonic development of this species under controlled conditions. Fertilized eggs of Colorado snapper are pelagic, spherical and transparent and contain one drop of oil. Eggs measured 0.77±0.09 mm and the drop of oil 0.14±0.01 mm. First cell division occurred at 0.05 h post-fertilization (HPF), hatching at 17.22 HPF under the above described conditions. Larvae total length (LT) was 1.8±0.1 mm. Embryonic development of this species was similar to other lutjanidae species. These results provide basic information for developing the necessary biotechnology for commercial seed production of the Colorado snapper.

ABSTRACT

Protected areas are important for natural population conservation since they work as refuge, feeding and breeding areas, where specimens should be exempt from human pressure. The generation of better criteria for management decisions and conservation of fishery resources, is based on the reproductive aspects of species that support fishing activities, since this information is related to the abundance, size and frequency of capture. With this aim, the reproductive biology of the spotted snapper Lutjanus guttatus was studied from April 2008 and February 2009 at the Utría National Park, Colombian Pacific. For this, we analyzed the volume of catch, size structure, sex ratio, fecundity, maturity size, breeding areas and seasons (n=278), of daily landings of 21 units of artisanal fisheries in ten fishing grounds in the Park. Form all landings, we evaluated a total of 4 319 individuals belonging to 84 species. Based on the number of individuals, Lutjanus guttatus ranked third in catches representing 6.4% (278 individuals), and 16th with 1.8% (95.79kg), based on catch biomass. The average weight was 0.34kg ±0.25kg, while 29cm±6.4cm for total length. The total length-weight relationship had the best fit (Kruskal-Wallis, p<0.05, n=272) with the equation PT=0.00000885* L T3.09. The occurrence of mature fish and high condition factors suggested a spawning season in June, September and October in sandy and rocky shores. This species showed an asynchronical gonadal development, with a mean sexual maturity size estimated in 23.5cm total length, and an absolute fecundity of 156 253.11 oocytes (mode of 4µm diameter). We concluded that L. guttatus medium sizes observed indicated a fishing pressure on small size specimens (the minimum size being 18cm); thus, we recommend the implementation of minimum catch sizes based on the criterion of size at maturity LT100 (25.5cm) and to apply seasonal fishing closures during the highest reproductive activity (June- October). However, it is necessary to obtain additional biological information with multi-year monitoring to improve fisheries management criteria in the area.


Las áreas protegidas son importantes para la conservación de las poblaciones naturales ya que funcionan como zonas de refugio, alimentación y reproducción en la que los organismos deberían estar eximidos de la presión antrópica, pero en aquellas áreas donde se permite la pesca, es elemental conocer los aspectos reproductivos de las especies que soportan la presión pesquera, ya que ésta información relacionada con las abundancias, tallas y frecuencias de captura pueden ofrecer mejores criterios para tomar decisiones de manejo y conservación de los recursos pequeros. La biología reproductiva del pargo lunarejo Lutjanus guttatus se estudió entre abril 2008 y febrero 2009 en el Parque Nacional Utría, Pacífico colombiano. Se analizaron los volúmenes de captura, estructura por tallas, proporción de sexos, fecundidad, talla media de madurez, áreas y épocas de reproducción (n=278). La longitud total osciló entre 18 y 56cm con una media y desviación estándar de 29±6.4cm. La talla media de madurez fue estimada en 23.5cm de longitud total, la fecundidad absoluta fue 156 253.11 ovocitos, con una moda de 4μm de diámetro y un desarrollo gonadal asincrónico. La presencia de individuos maduros y de un alto factor de condición sugieren épocas de desove en junio, septiembre y octubre en litorales rocosos y arenosos.

ABSTRACT

Margens de estuários com a vegetação de manguezal formam um importante hábitat para peixes, pois são zonas de alimentação, abrigo e berçário. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo caracterizar a ictiofauna associada às raízes de mangue do estuário do Rio Pacoti (CE). Foram realizados 10 censos visuais com duração de 90 minutos cada. Foram feitas 671 avistagens, com densidade média de 0,74 avistagens/minuto. Os indivíduos pertencem a 22 espécies e 18 famílias. Todas as espécies registradas são de origem marinha, apesar das amostragens serem realizadas principalmente no período chuvoso. As famílias que apresentaram um maior número de espécies foram Gerreidae e Lutjanidae. As espécies que apresentaram maior frequência de ocorrência foram Lutjanus alexandrei, Lutjanus jocu e Bathygobius soporator, estando presentes em todos os censos. As duas espécies mais abundantes foram L. alexandrei (48 por cento) e L. jocu (17 por cento). Levando-se em consideração as estimativas de tamanho destas espécies, foi verificado que as raízes de mangue são habitadas principalmente por indivíduos jovens de ambas as espécies, o que leva a supor que estas utilizam tal habitat como área de berçário. Contudo, na estação de coleta com menor complexidade estrutural foi avistado o maior número de indivíduos do gênero Lutjanus, em praticamente todas as faixas de comprimento, o que sugere que no Rio Pacoti a quantidade de raízes pode não influenciar na quantidade de indivíduos abrigados. Aproximadamente 70 por cento das espécies avistadas também ocorrem em ambientes recifais, o que demonstra a existência de fortes conexões entre esses dois ecossistemas. Os resultados encontrados enfatizam a importância do habitat estudado para a conservação da ictiofauna costeira e apontam a necessidade de pesquisas relacionadas principalmente ao recrutamento, padrões reprodutivos e tróficos das duas espécies mais representativas.


The mangrove vegetation along the margins of estuaries is an important habitat for fish, serving as feeding, shelter and nursery zones. The present work describes the fish fauna associated to mangrove roots at the Pacoti River estuary. A total of ten visual censuses of 90 minutes each were conducted, yielding the number of 671 fish counted, with an average of 0.74 counts/minute. The fishes were identified pertaining to 22 species from 18 different families. All the studied species are originally marine, although the samples were mainly carried out during the rainy season. Gerreidae and Lutjanidae were the more representative families. The species Lutjanus alexandrei, Lutjanus jocu and Bathygobius soporator were present in all censuses and the first two were also the most abundant, with 48 and 17 percent of the total counts, respectively. Taking into account size estimations of the fish, it was verified that mangrove roots are inhabited mainly by juveniles of both species, indicating the use of this habitat as a nursery area. However, in the least complex sampling site, specimens of genus Lutjanus were sought in higher quantities, comprinsing all size classes, thus suggesting the abundance of roots in Pacoti River might not influence the abundance of sheltered fishes. Another important observation is that almost 70 percent of the species present in the mangrove roots are typical of reef habitats, indicating the existence of strong connections between these two ecosystems. The results emphasize the importance of this habitat for ichthyofauna conservation to coastal areas. In addition, studies regarding to fish recruitment, reproductive and trophic patterns are needed, especially to those two main important species described herein.

ABSTRACT

In this paper we report two incidents of ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) that occurred in 2008 on Kakeroma Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. A family consisting of father (42 y.o.), mother (39 y.o.), daughter (11 y.o.) and son (6 y.o.), as well as a friend of the family (male, 78 y.o.) consumed sliced flesh (sashimi) and developed typical symptoms of CPF 4-5 h later: diarrhea, vomiting, and paresthesia of the extremities. Additionally, the two male adults (42 and 78 y.o.) developed mild hypotention (84/48 and 94/40 mmHg, respectively) and bradycardia (36 and 50 bpm, respectively) and were rushed to the ER of the nearest hospital, located on an adjacent island. The implicated fish were caught together off the west coast of the island and were identified as <i>Variola louti</i> and <i>Lutjanus monostigma</i> based on analysis of 16S rRNA gene coded on mtDNA. Remnants of the implicated fish and other fish caught on the same occasion were examined by the official mouse bioassay method (MBA), which defines the minimum amount of CFP toxin needed to kill a male mouse of ddY strain of 20 g body weight within 24 h as one mouse unit (MU). A significantly high toxicity was detected in the <i>V. louti</i> (0.2 MU/g) eaten by the family and the <i>L. monostigma</i> (0.8 MU/g) eaten by the elderly man. Other specimens of <i>Lethrinus nebulosus</i>, <i>Variola albimarginata</i>, <i>Lutjanus gibbus</i> (2 specimens), <i>Aphareus rutilans</i>, and <i>Sphyraena forsteri</i> (2 specimens) were found to be nontoxic (< 0.025 MU/g).<br> The medical records regarding island inhabitants (ca. 1,500) kept at Kakeroma Tokushukai Clinic, the only medical facility on the Island, and also at Setouchi Tokushukai Hospital, a nearest hospital on an adjacent island (Amami) revealed 6 CFP outbreaks involving 13 cases between 2005 and 2008. The estimated frequency of CFP was 10.0 incidents/10,000 persons/year and the morbidity rate was 21.7 cases/10,000 persons/year. The symptoms and signs observed in the patients and the implicated fish species, <i>L. monostigma</i> and<i> V. louti</i>, were typical of CFP in this region.

ABSTRACT

The diet and feeding ecology of juvenile dog snapper (Lutjanus jocu) were investigated in 92 specimens collected in four intertidal mangrove creeks of Curuçá estuary, Northern Brazil, between September 2003 and July 2004. No significant differences in total length were found between the sampling months. Feeding intensity was high as indicated by high stomach fullness index and low vacuity index. The most important prey was Penaeidae, followed by Grapsidae and Porcellanidae. The diet of juvenile dog snapper showed clear seasonal differences. Specimens from dry season (September and November) and dry / wet season transition (January), were specialists feeding exclusively on Penaeidae. However, the specimens from wet season (March and May) and wet /dry season transition (July) that consumed mainly Grapsidae, Penaeidae and Porcellanidae were generalist. These seasonal changes in diet could be related to variations in food availability.


A dieta e a ecologia alimentar de juvenis de Lutjanus jocu foram verificadas em 92 espécimes coletados em quatro canais de maré do estuário do rio Curuçá, Norte do Brasil, entre setembro de 2003 e julho de 2004. O comprimento total dos peixes coletados não apresentou diferenças significativas entre os meses amostrados. A intensidade alimentar foi elevada conforme indicado pelos altos valores do índice de repleção estomacal e os baixos valores do índice de vacuidade. A presa mais importante foi Penaeidae, seguida por Grapsidae e Porcellanidae. A dieta de juvenis de L. jocu apresentou diferenças sazonais evidentes. Os espécimes da estação seca (setembro e novembro) e transição seca/chuvosa (janeiro) foram considerados especialistas alimentando-se exclusivamente de Penaeidae. No entanto, os espécimes da estação chuvosa (março e maio) e da transição chuvosa/seca (julho), que alimentaram-se principalmente de Grapsidae, Penaeidae e Porcellanidae, foram considerados generalistas. Esta mudança sazonal na dieta poderia estar relacionada com a disponibilidade do alimento.

ABSTRACT

There are limited population biology studies of the spotted rose snapper Lutjanus guttatus. Adults of this highly valued commercial species are fished with gillnets and hook-and-line, while juveniles are caught as shrimp bycatch and usually discarded. The effects of this practice have not been studied. As a first step, this study assessed some population parameters of juvenile snapper caught by the Gulf of California shrimp fishery. We looked for early growth stages and determined by the least squares method the weight to standard length relationship as W= 0.000092, SL3.0509. Length frequency distributions were constructed; using the ELEFAN I method, von Bertalanffy growth parameters were found to be L¥= 515mm (standard length) and K= 0.13. Natural mortality (M= 0.35) was estimated from Pauly’s empirical and Ralston equations; and total mortality was calculated by the catch curve equation. The recruitment pattern extended throughout the year, with spring and summer peaks. The sex ratio was 1:1 and the length at capture was 80mm (standard length). With an apparently high fishing mortality levels, it is recommended that abundance and distribution studies be performed to determine the impact of shrimp fishing on this population.


Son escasos los estudios sobre la biología poblacional del pargo lunarejo Lutjanus guttatus. Los adultos de esta especie, de alto valor comercial, son capturados con redes agalleras y anzuelos mientras que los juveniles son capturados como fauna de acompañamiento de la pesca de camarón y usualmente descartados. Los efectos de esta práctica no han sido evaluados. Como un primer paso, en este estudio se estiman algunos parámetros poblacionales de juveniles del pargo lunarejo capturados en la pesquería de camarón del Golfo de California. Se indagaron estadios de desarrollo y se determinó mediante mínimos cuadrados la relación longitud estándar-peso como W= 0,000092; SL3,0509. Se construyeron distribuciones de frecuencia de talla, y usando el método ELEFAN I se encontraron los parámetros de crecimiento de von Bertalanffy L¥= 515mm (longitud estándar) y K= 0,3. La mortalidad natural (M= 0,35) fue estimada por la ecuación empírica de Pauly y la ecuación de Ralston, y la mortalidad total se calculó mediante la ecuación de la curva de captura. El patrón de reclutamiento se extendió a lo largo del año, con máximos en primavera y verano. La proporción sexual fue 1:1 y la talla media de captura fue 80mm (longitud estándar). Con una tasa de mortalidad pesquera aparentemente alta, se recomienda evaluaciones de la abundancia y distribución de la especie para determinar el impacto de la pesquería del camarón sobre esta población.

Os adultos desta espécie, de alto valor comercial, são capturados com redes de emalhar e anzóis enquanto que os juvenis são capturados como fauna de acompanhamento da pesca de camarão e usualmente descartados. Os efeitos desta prática não tem sido avaliados. Como um primeiro passo, neste estudo se estimam alguns parâmetros populacionais de juvenis do "pargo lunarejo" capturados na pescaria de camarão do Golfo da Califôrnia. Indagaram-se estágios de desenvolvimento e se determinou mediante mínimos quadrados a relação longitude estandar-peso como W= 0,000092; SL3,0509. Construiram-se distribuições de frequência de tamanho, e usando o método ELEFAN I se encontraram os parâmetros de crescimento de von Bertalanffy L¥= 515mm (longitude estandar) e K= 0,3. Reproduction and growth of the fish Lutjanus guttatus (Pisces: Lutjanidae) in the Gulf of Nicoya, Costa Rica. The fish Lutjanus guttatus is important in the fisheries of Golfo de Nicoya, Costa Rica where they are captured with varied gear mainly by the artisanal fleet. We measured specimens from the commercial catch of 2002-2006. Gonadal state was determined macroscopically and age with otoliths The total length-total weight relationship was y = 0.0236x2.8153 and total length-eviscerated weight y = 0.0216x2.8129. Simplified relationships were y = 0.0173x3 and y = 0.0162x3. There is year-round reproduction with peaks in March (dry season) and September (rainy season). Male-female sexual ratio was 1:1. The age-length key for the gulf shows availability until the 6 years of age. The von Bertalanffy growth curve is L (t) = 65,9 (1-e -0,13(t+2,66)). Rev. Biol. Trop. 57 (1-2): 125-131. Una de las pesquerías más importantes en el Golfo de Nicoya es la del pargo mancha (Lutjanus guttatus); su captura se realiza con diversas artes y principalmente por la flota artesanal. Estudiamos especímenes de la captura comercial artesanal entre el 2002 y 2006. Se analizaron las relaciones morfométricas para aplicar la ecuación P = aLb; el análisis del estado de madurez gonadal se hizo macroscópicamente; se determinó la edad a través de la lectura de anillos anuales de los otolitos sagitales y los parámetros de crecimiento fueron aplicados en la ecuación de von Bertalanffy: L (t) = * [1-exp (-K*(t-t0))]. La relación longitud total-peso total es y = 0.0236x 2.8153 y longitud total-peso eviscerado y = 0.0216x2.8129; las relaciones simplificadas correspondientes fueron y = 0.0173x3 y y = 0.0162x3. La reproducción es todo el año con dos picos en marzo y setiembre (época seca y lluviosa, respectivamente). La proporción macho-hembra es 1:1. Se generó para la población del Golfo de Nicoya una clave edad-talla donde su utilidad se presenta como adecuada hasta los 6 años de edad. La curva de crecimiento von Bertalanffy es L (t)=65,9(1-e -0,13(t+2,66)).

ABSTRACT

The main objective of this work is to evaluate the occurrence of bromophenols (2bromophenol, 4bromophenol, 2,4dibromophenol, 2,6dibromophenol and 2,4,6tribromophenol), in the flesh and guts in two species of the LutjanidaeFamily: Lutjanus synagris and Ocyurus chrysurus. The bromophenols were extracted by steam distillation with pentaneether (7:3 v/v), identified by reverse phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLCUV), and quantified bythe externalstandard method. Total bromophenol concentrations were similar in the muscle of both species, rangingfrom 36 ng g¹ to 349 ng g¹. The total bromophenol concentrations in stomach (ranging from 12 ng g¹ to 586 ng g¹)were slightly higher than in muscle. The presence of bromophenol in the muscles of the species under study may occuras a result of their diet. The results of this work are therefore expected to contribute toward a better understanding ofthe path of bromophenol absorption from the fish's stomach to the rest of its body.


O principal objetivo do presente trabalho foi o estudo de bromofenóis (2bromofenol, 4bromofenol, 2,4dibromofenol,2,6dibromofenol and 2,4,6tribromofenol), no músculo e estômago de duas espécies de peixes da Familia Lutjanidae: Lutjanus synagris e Ocyurus chrysurus. Os bromofenóis foramextraídos através de destilação por arraste a vapor com pentanoéter (7:3 v/v), analisados por Cromatografia Líquida de AltaEficiência e quantificados por padronização externa. As concentrações totais de bromofenóis no músculo de ambas as espécies foram similares e estiveram na faixa de 36 ng g¹ a349 ng g¹. As concentrações totais de bromofenóis no estômago (na faixa de 12 ng g¹ a 586 ng g¹) foram mais altas queno músculo. A presença de bromofenóis no músculo das espécies estudadas pode ter origem na dieta. Os resultados destetrabalho contribuirão para o melhor entendimento das rotas deabsorção de bromofenóis nos peixes.

Se describen los nemátodos encontrados en el sistema digestivo de las especies de pargo Lutjanus synagris y Lutjanus analis. Esta investigación se orientó principalmente a la clasificación taxonómica de los parásitos y no a los efectos o patologías que estos puedan ocasionar en los peces. Se tuvo en cuenta que en Colombia los pargos constituyen uno de los recursos de mayor importancia para la comercialización; Lutjanus synagris y Lutjanus analis son especies demersales explotadas a lo largo de toda la región costera e insular del Caribe colombiano. Los tractos digestivos se colectaron de los pargos capturados artesanalmente (nasa, cordel) por pescadores de las zonas de Santa Marta y Neguanje; se identificaron los siguientes géneros de nemátodos: Capillaria spp., Contracaecum spp., Cucullanus spp. y Raphidascaris spp.; el último género fue el más representativo.


In this study nematodes are described found in the digestive system of the species Lutjanus synagris and Lutjanus analis. The aim of this research was the taxonomic location of the intestinal parasites and not the effects or pathologies that these can cause in the fishes. For this study one kept in mind that in Colombia the pargos constitute one of the resources of more importance for the commercialization, being Lutjanus synagris and Lutjanus analis, demersal species exploded along the whole coastal region to insular of the Caribbean of Colombia. The digestive tracts were from the pargos captured hand madely (nasa, line) for fishermen of Santa Marta and Neguanje areas; time during which were located four kind of nematodes: Capillaria spp., Contracaecum spp., Cucullanus spp. and Raphidascaris spp., being this last one the most representative.

Desde febrero hasta octubre de 2002 se colectaron los tractos digestivos de las especies de pargo Lutjanus synagris y Lutjanus analis, capturados artesanalmente en la región de Santa Marta, Caribe colombiano. El objetivo del estudio fue clasificar taxonómicamente hasta el nivel específico posible los individuos colectados, teniendo en cuenta la zona del tracto digestivo con mayor abundancia de tremátodos; así mismo se elaboraron fichas taxonómicas en las que se consignó información adicional a la descripción de los organismos, como hospedador y distribución geográfica. Se identificaron los siguientes géneros de tremátodos: Torticaecum spp., Hamacreadium spp., Helicometrina spp., Lepocreadium spp., Pseudopecoelus spp., Xystretum spp., Lasiotocus spp., Stegopa spp., Paracryptogonimus spp., Siphodera spp., Stephanostomum spp. y Megalomyzon spp.


From February until October 2002, the digestive tracts were collected of species of snapper Lutjanus synagris and Lutjanus analis, captured handmadely in the region of Santa Marta - Colombian Caribbean. This study aimed to locate taxonomically lowest possible level individuals collected, taking into account the area of the digestive tract with greater abundance of trematodes, also taxonomic cards were developed in which appropriated additional information to the description of the organism, as a host and geographical distribution. They were identified Torticaecum spp., Hamacreadium spp., Helicometrina spp., Lepocreadium spp., Pseudopecoelus spp., Xystretum spp., Lasiotocus spp., Stegopa spp., Paracryptogonimus spp., Siphodera spp., Stephanostomum spp., and Megalomyzon spp.
